Specifically, vitamin D supplementation has been scientifically proven (from human clinical trials) to be effective in reducing the risk of: falls and fractures in older adults, cardiovascular disease and related complications, colon cancer, breast cancer, blood pressure, all-cause mortality, influenza, multiple sclerosis, arthralgia (joint pain). Vitamin D may also help reduce: body fat in people trying to lose weight, asthma attacks, tuberculosis symptoms, type 1 diabetes in children of pregnant women taking vitamin D supplements. This important micronutrient is also effective in increasing the strength of the nervous and muscular systems in adults, insulin production, and better insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetics, leading to better blood sugar control. Vitamin D also increases testosterone levels in men, which can help maintain healthy hormone levels as a person ages.
The preferred form for supplementation is vitamin D3 (the animal form) over vitamin D2 (the plant form) because a smaller dose of vitamin D3 is needed to raise blood levels of vitamin D. It is best to take vitamin D3 with a meal containing at least 10 grams of fat, as this improves its absorption significantly compared to low-fat meals.
