Keratins are a group of tough, fibrous proteins that help maintain the health of joints, hair, nails and skin. Keratins provide exceptionally high levels of the amino acid cysteine, which is a rich source of sulfur molecules that nourish and strengthen cartilage. When the sulfur molecules in cysteine bond together, they form very strong bonds called “cysteine bridges.” These “bridges” provide important support for weight-bearing joints. Swanson’s new Premium Brand Keratin, derived from Tibetan wool, provides pure, nutritious hydrolyzed keratin to nourish the body’s connective tissue and maintain healthy skin, hair and nails.
Aging is associated with a loss of skin elasticity and a deterioration in the condition of connective tissue in the body. The amount of the two main components of connective tissue (collagen and keratin) decreases with age, and scientific studies have shown that keratin supplementation can slow the deterioration of the quality of skin, nails and hair due to aging or conditions characterized by high levels of oxidative stress. Keratin has been found to increase the levels of antioxidant enzymes in connective tissue cells. Keratin also stimulates skin cells to reproduce themselves faster, which means there are more cells producing structural proteins, thus improving the health of connective tissue.
