S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is a compound that is naturally produced in the body from the amino acid methionine and is found in almost all tissues of the human body. It is formed from the amino acid methionine bound to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a key energy molecule in the body.

CAM-e is one of the most powerful methyl donors, the synthesis of which decreases with age or under the influence of other factors. The main task of CAM-e is to donate methyl groups to various molecules in the body, thanks to which hundreds of metabolic reactions take place in the body, such as the formation of DNA, proteins, hormones, fatty and nucleic acids, etc.

S-Adenosylmethionine exists in two forms – S/S and R/S, with its biologically active form having the S/S structure. SAM-e protects the brain and nerve sheaths by transferring its S-methyl group to them. This process contributes to the increased synthesis of serotonin, dopamine and phosphatidylserine, which are important for mood and tone.

With the help of vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 (folic acid), CAM-e transfers the methyl group from its composition to surrounding tissues and organs, thereby supporting cell membranes, removing toxic substances from the body, and increasing the production of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters.

As it breaks down, CAM-e charges many other molecules, a process that promotes the maintenance of articular cartilage in good condition. CAM-e is thought to increase the growth of chondrocytes – the cells that make up articular cartilage, improve cartilage density and reduce chondrocyte damage.

Many modern studies indicate that SAM deficiency is common in people with depression, osteoarthritis, and in cases of impaired liver function.

It is recommended to take CAM-e on an empty stomach, as it is absorbed much better that way.
