Supports general health
Irish moss, scientifically known as Chondrus crispus or also known as "sea moss", is a type of red edible algae with numerous health benefits and a wide range of uses. It is characterized by its rich chemical composition, which includes vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides and phenols.
Chondrus crispus is an edible seaweed that grows in coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean, including those in Europe and North America. Like other seaweeds, it is a rich source of many nutrients that are difficult to obtain compared to most foods.
History and culinary uses
For centuries, Irish moss has been used primarily in Irish cuisine, used to thicken and improve the texture of dishes such as desserts, soups, and pastries. This property is due to substances in the red algae called carrageenans.
Medical benefits and health properties
Irish moss also has health benefits. It has been traditionally used to combat a variety of problems, including respiratory problems, stomach disorders, and skin problems. The carrageenan in the moss is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics for its skin-healing and irritation-relieving properties.
Nutrient richness
This type of red algae contains a variety of chemicals that are important for health. Some of the key components include:
-
Carrageenans : The main chemical component that makes Irish moss valuable is carrageenans. They are polysaccharides that are extracted from the seaweed and have important applications in the food industry.
-
Vitamins and Minerals: Irish moss contains important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, calcium, iodine, iron, and magnesium. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals in the body and supports the immune system. Minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium are essential for bone, blood, and nervous system health.
-
Bioactive ingredients: It also contains a variety of bioactive ingredients that have beneficial effects on the body. These are phenols, terpenes, letinenes and others, which are associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
-
Fiber: Rich in polysaccharides, which are a type of dietary fiber that acts as a prebiotic, stimulating good bacteria in the gut
Health benefits
Supports thyroid health
The thyroid gland is responsible for releasing hormones that are important for our growth, energy, reproduction, and repair. To do this, the thyroid gland needs a number of nutrients, one of which is iodine, and another of which is the amino acid, tyrosine. Both nutrients are found in seaweed, although in different levels.
Supports immunity
The harsh coastal conditions in which seaweeds, like sea moss, have evolved to survive mean that they have developed an enviable defense mechanism. As such, they are rich in phytochemicals that, when consumed, provide health benefits including immune modulation and improved immune response for the one consuming this type of seaweed.
Improves blood sugar control
Studies show that including seaweed as part of a healthy, balanced diet can help manage blood sugar and potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This is due in part to compounds like carotenoid and fucoxanthin, which help reduce insulin resistance and support better blood sugar control. The high fiber content in seaweed also plays a role in maintaining optimal blood sugar levels.
Supports gut health
Seaweed is rich in dietary fiber, much of which is in the form of polysaccharides, fiber that we cannot digest but the bacteria in our gut can – thus, it acts as a prebiotic, or food source, for these beneficial gut microbes.
Nourishing gut bacteria in this way helps create a favorable environment to promote the microbes that offer us the greatest benefits. It is these gut bacteria that, among other things, help shape our health by producing beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids.
While it may not be part of your daily diet, consuming sea moss supplements certainly has impressive benefits. Not only is it a rich source of vitamins and minerals that are good for the body, but it also contains high levels of omega-3s and fiber. What’s more, sea moss stands out from other green plants due to its ability to boost the immune system.
